Although only about 65 square miles in area, the city of Washington, DC is almost everything that is America. This capital city of the United States not only teems with history, but also is filled with some of the best museums, arts and culture, parks and gardens, and architecture to be found anywhere. Not only a world hub of power and diplomacy, the District of Columbia is filled with beauty and intellect. It is filled with both monuments of the nation’s past, and aspirations for the future almost all of which are within walking distance of each other.
One of the best ways to acquaint yourself with the city is by taking one of the sightseeing tours that offer free all-day reboarding. These tours make stops at all of the major places of interest within the city, including Arlington National Cemetery where you can visit the grave site of President Kennedy, the Tomb of the Unknowns, Arlington House and the Robert E. Lee Memorial, and the Women in Military Service for America Memorial.
From other stops along the tour route you can walk to: the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Memorial and the WWII Memorial; the White House and the White House Visitor Center; the Smithsonian museums including the Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of the American Indian, the Arts and Industries Building, the National Postal Museum, and the museums of Natural History and American History. Other attractions that are within walking distance of the tram stops include the West Front of the United States Capitol, the Library of Congress, the Supreme Court, the Botanical Gardens, the National Gallery of Art, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Tidal Basin Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials and Washington Monuments.
Although most visitors come to see the well-known monuments of the city, you are encouraged to leave the mall area to discover the many historic neighborhoods of the city such as Georgetown or Dupont Circle. Washington, DC is filled with colorful and diverse neighborhoods, each filled with interesting boutiques and shops, galleries and museums, historic homes, colorful gardens, and wonderful restaurants. These neighborhoods, along with the National Zoo, are great for walking and are easily accessible by Metrorail or Metrobus.
